Deoria’s Water Tank Horror: The Gruesome Case of Ashok Gawande
When patients at Deoria’s Maharshi Deoraha Baba Medical College complained of a mysterious foul smell earlier this week, no one could have imagined the horror that awaited them. What began as a simple maintenance check turned into a chilling crime scene — the decomposed body of a man was found floating inside the hospital’s rooftop water tank.
The Shocking Discovery
On Monday, the hospital staff began receiving complaints from patients and attendants about a strong stench wafting through the wards. The trail led to a large water tank located on the fifth floor. When the lid was lifted, officials were met with a gruesome sight — a human body, bloated and decomposed beyond recognition, floating amid the contaminated water.
The panic was immediate. Hospital authorities promptly shut down the water supply to prevent possible contamination and alerted the police. A joint response team comprising the police, fire brigade, and forensic experts was dispatched to retrieve the body from the tank.
After preliminary identification processes, the victim was confirmed as Ashok Gawande, a 61-year-old resident of Thane, Maharashtra.

Identity and Background
According to officials, Gawande had been undergoing psychiatric treatment in Maharashtra for several years. Police investigation revealed that he had recently travelled north to Uttar Pradesh to visit his in-laws in Gorakhpur. However, he left their house within minutes without informing anyone and soon vanished.
Investigators later learned that while in Deoria, Gawande sustained a leg injury. A local resident spotted him in distress and took him to the medical college for treatment. Strangely, after the good Samaritan departed, Gawande disappeared from the premises — only to be discovered days later in the hospital’s water tank.
Tracing the Victim’s Family
The process of identifying and locating Gawande’s family took an unusual turn. Though he had mentioned his name and partial address during registration at the hospital, the information was incomplete. Investigators had to send a team to Maharashtra, where they eventually traced his family using social media and local networks. His wife, Aneeta Gawande, was informed, and she later travelled to Deoria to claim the body and perform the final rites.
According to police sources, Ashok had been estranged from his family due to personal differences and had been living separately for several years.
Post-Mortem and Police Action
The post-mortem conducted on Friday revealed that the cause of death was asphyxia, indicating suffocation. Forensic experts have preserved viscera samples for further analysis. Based on the preliminary findings, authorities have directed the registration of a murder case to probe the suspicious death and the mysterious circumstances that led to Gawande’s body ending up in the hospital’s water supply.
Administrative Fallout and Probe Findings
The discovery sparked outrage and alarm across Deoria, forcing local authorities and the state government into action. District Magistrate Divya Mittal visited the site immediately and formed a special inquiry committee. The committee’s report, now submitted to both the DM and the state government, highlighted serious administrative lapses at the hospital.
Among the major violations noted were:
- Unrestricted access to the hospital terrace, where the water tank is located.
- Lack of CCTV coverage in high-risk areas.
- Discovery of objectionable items, including liquor bottles, on the terrace.
Owing to these findings, the government promptly removed college principal Dr Rajesh Kumar Barnwal from his post.
However, the hospital’s acting principal, Dr Rajni, stated that she had only learned about the case through reports and had sought a detailed account from the Chief Medical Superintendent before commenting further.
Water Safety Concern and Public Panic
The revelation that a corpse had been floating in the hospital’s water tank sent waves of fear among patients and staff alike, raising serious concerns about hygiene and safety. Hospital officials swiftly clarified that the water from the tank was not used for drinking but rather for sanitation and other non-potable purposes.
Nevertheless, the incident has shaken public trust in hospital management and emphasized glaring loopholes in maintaining basic infrastructure and security protocols.
The Road Ahead
As police continue to piece together the final days of Ashok Gawande’s life, several questions remain unanswered: How did he end up on the terrace? Was it a case of suicide, accident, or a calculated murder? And why were access points and security measures so poorly managed in a government medical facility?
For now, the case stands as a grim reminder of institutional negligence and the importance of security oversight within public healthcare systems. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have pledged to uncover the full truth behind this horrific tragedy.
