Durgapur MBBS Student Gangrape Case: A Timeline of Events
In a shocking incident, a second-year MBBS student from Odisha was allegedly gangraped outside her private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with authorities springing into action to ensure justice is served.
The Incident
The victim, a student at a private medical college in Durgapur, was allegedly dragged outside the campus and gangraped on Friday night. She had stepped out with a male friend when the incident occurred. The victim was later rushed to the hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment. Her condition is stable, but she is traumatized, according to her family.
Arrests and Investigation
The police have made significant progress in the case, arresting five suspects so far. The first three arrests were made on Sunday – Apu Bauri (21), Firdous Shiekh (23), and Shiekh Riazuddin (32). They were sent to 10-day police custody after being booked under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for gang rape and Section 3(5) for joint criminal liability.
Breakthrough in the Case
The police cracked the case after recovering the victim’s mobile phone from the suspects. A call made from one of the suspects’ phones to the victim was traced, leading the police to launch a massive search operation in a forested area behind the college. This breakthrough led to the arrest of the initial three suspects.

Additional Arrests
Following the initial arrests, two more suspects were apprehended – Sheikh Nasiruddin (24) and Safiq (27). Nasiruddin’s motorcycle, used by the suspects to flee the crime scene, was seized by the police. All five accused may be taken to the crime scene for reconstruction.
Current Status
The investigation is ongoing, with another man named in the complaint being interrogated. Although he hasn’t been arrested yet, authorities are questioning him to verify if others were involved in the incident. The National Commission for Women (NCW) and the West Bengal Commission for Women have taken suo motu cognizance of the case, seeking action taken reports and police reports within specified timelines.
Demand for Justice
The victim’s father has demanded justice for his daughter, expressing relief that she is stable but still traumatized. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has also urged West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to take strong action against the accused, ensuring exemplary punishment under the law.
