The arrested men were identified as:
- Karuppasamy alias Satheesh (30)
- Kaleeswaran alias Karthik (21), his younger brother
- Guna alias Thavasi (20), their distant relative
All three hail from Madurai and Sivagangai districts. The two siblings have multiple pending cases related to murder and theft, according to Commissioner Sundar.
The injured accused—Karuppasamy and Guna with gunshot wounds on both legs, and Kaleeswaran with one injury—were admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment.
How Police Caught Them
Commissioner Sundar briefed reporters on Tuesday (November 4) that the accused were residing at Irugur, around four kilometers from the crime scene. The trio had been traced using digital evidence, including surveillance camera visuals.
A police team moved to Vellakinar at around 10:45 p.m. on Monday, acting on specific intelligence. During the attempt to arrest them, the suspects resisted and attacked an officer with a weapon, prompting the police to open fire in self-defense.
Following the operation, police recovered the survivor’s mobile phone and a gold ring that the men had stolen.

Sequence of the Crime
Investigations revealed that the crime occurred around 11 p.m. on November 2. The trio, reportedly drunk after consuming alcohol in Irugur, had ridden to the deserted land near the airport carrying another bottle of liquor. They noticed a young couple inside a parked car, broke the window with a stone, and attacked the woman’s 25-year-old boyfriend using a sickle and a stone.
The men then abducted the student and took her behind a nearby college campus after scaling a wall. Despite an immediate search operation by nearly 100 police personnel, the darkness and dense vegetation made it difficult to trace the suspects that night.
The survivor later managed to find her way out and was taken for medical treatment and counselling. Her boyfriend, also hospitalized, is reported to be stable.
Background of the Accused
According to Commissioner Sundar, the siblings had been living in Coimbatore for nearly a decade, earning a livelihood through odd jobs. Guna had joined them only a few months earlier. The stolen two-wheeler used in the crime had been reported missing from the Kovilpalayam police limits days before the incident.
It was also confirmed that Karuppasamy and Kaleeswaran were out on bail in a recent theft case filed in Sathyamangalam, Erode district.
Legal Action and Charges
Seven police teams examined over 300 CCTV recordings to identify and trace the culprits. The three accused were initially booked under Sections 296(B), 118(1), 324(4), 140(3), and 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), based on the complaint from the survivor’s boyfriend.
Following the survivor’s statement, police plan to add Section 70 (gang rape) of BNS to the charges.
Commissioner Sundar emphasized that Coimbatore police acted swiftly and with precision to ensure justice for the survivor, reaffirming that the city police will show zero tolerance toward such heinous crimes.
