Shubham Gill Replaces Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I Captain!
Shubman Gill has officially been named India’s new One-Day International (ODI) captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma ahead of the upcoming series against Australia.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the change on Saturday, announcing Gill’s elevation to the 50-over leadership following his recent appointment as Test captain earlier this year. The ODI series is scheduled to begin on October 19 in Australia.
Rohit, who captained India across all formats until mid-2024, remains part of the 15-member squad alongside senior batter Virat Kohli. Under Rohit’s leadership, India lifted the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, defeating New Zealand in the final. His captaincy tenure also included India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, after which he retired from the shortest format of the game.

The veteran opener, now 38, has since stepped away from both T20Is and Test cricket, marking the end of a decorated international career that spanned over 17 years. Kohli, too, retired from Tests following the 2024–25 tour of Australia.
Suryakumar Yadav continues as India’s T20I captain after guiding the team to victory in the T20 Asia Cup 2025 earlier this year. India’s selections for the limited-overs assignments against Australia reflected continuity, with no major surprises in the squads announced.
Gill’s appointment signals a generational shift in Indian cricket leadership, as the team begins its next chapter under the 26-year-old opening batsman.
